Candidate statement

I have been an active member of the profession for more than 20 years. I enjoy challenging myself, applying my knowledge, and working with people. I believe my knowledge and experience would be a benefit to CPA Alberta and its members.

What do you see impacting the CPA profession, and how can CPA Alberta best respond?

The primary things I see impacting the CPA profession are automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. These are increasingly being integrated into accounting processes, which could potentially change the nature of traditional accounting tasks. CPAs will need to adapt to using these technologies effectively while also focusing on developing skills that complement automation, such as data analysis and strategic decision-making.

The best response to these challenges in my opinion is a continued focus on professional development in these areas. Ideally, these programs should be more tactical than theoretical in nature. A good initial focus could be data analytics from the perspective of offering exposure to different platforms like Power BI and Tableau.

How do your skills and background position you to positively contribute to the CPA Alberta Board and lead the governance of the profession?

Over the course of my career, I have gained experience working with boards in both public and private entities in a number of industries, working to develop and implement both governance and strategic improvements. This experience informs my knowledge of a variety of business and economic challenges in Alberta. In addition, I continue to pursue further training in a vast number of areas, including human resources, risk management, and business analytics to develop my understanding of new emerging issues. I have applied this knowledge to develop policies and procedures to ensure good governance within organizations. I have mentored prospective CPAs and continue to support the education and training of my staff.
